My top 10 films of 2018

Hello everyone!

Let’s get straight to business. Of the films I’ve managed to watch this year here’s my top 10 of 2018.

10. Black Panther

black-panther-quad-posterA welcome addition to the Marvel canon. Big, bright and bold it’s a wild ride through Wakanda and extremely important for its predominantly black cast taking the lead in a Hollywood blockbuster.

9Peter Rabbit

deluxe-peter-rabbit-new-quad-posterAn absolutely joyous family film. James Corden voices the eponymous hero and brings him to life magnificently. Charming, funny and feel-good.

8I, Tonya

I-Tonya-Banner-PosterA dramatisation surrounding the rivalry of two American figure skaters, I, Tonya is witty, dark and features exceptional turns, or triple axels, from Margot Robbie and Allison Janney.

WidowsDirector Steve McQueen’s most commercial film to date is an impressive, if overlong, heist thriller. Current, layered and featuring some incredibly strong performances (take a bow Viola Davis and Daniel Kaluuya) Widows may be McQueen’s best film yet.

6. Mary Poppins Returns

Mary PoppinsThe world’s favourite nanny took 54 years to come back, but she returned with a bang and a bag of tricks once again. Emily Blunt stars in this charming family musical that ticks all the right boxes. Not as good as the original, but a worthy companion.

5. Teen Titans Go! To The Movies

This quirky kids cartoon may be a surprise inclusion to some, but not if you’ve watched it. Never taking itself too seriously, it’s full of in-jokes, one-liners, cameos and toe-tapping musical numbers. What you need is an upbeat inspirational song about life.

4. A Star Is Born

A Star Is BornBradley Cooper and Lady Gaga star in this bittersweet love story that’s both joyous and tragic. Terrific performances and an exceptional score make this a hauntingly memorable movie.

3. Coco

Screen-Shot-2017-08-07-at-9.29.17-AM-e1502124096539Disney-Pixar’s Mexican inspired kaleidoscopic treat is arguably their best film yet. Set within the Day of the Dead Festival, Coco explores life, death, love and betrayal with typical tact and sensitivity. Superb animation, outstanding vocal performances and an atmospheric score make this a must-see.

2Avengers: Infinity War bad baddy Thanos gets his giant purple hands on the Infinity Stones and all hell breaks loose. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo manage to accommodate the massive ensemble cast with style, wit and action-a-plenty. As spectacular as it is entertaining, this is how you make a superhero ensemble movie.

1Mission: Impossible – Fallout

MI6_INTL_SUNBURST_4.0x3.0m_BILLBOARD_OOH_CYP.inddThe sixth, and best, instalment of the high-octane action franchise. Taking cinematic stunts to another level this slightly darker, more mature, Mission throws down the gauntlet to Bond 25 in spectacular fashion.
